INTRODUCTION

This unit will introduce you to the ‘suaad’ (Devanagri: सुआद | IPA:  /sʊaːd̪/ | Pronunciation:       ) group. The 'suaad' group consists of two letters - ‘suaad’ and ‘zuaad’ as shown below:

Both these letters share the same base shape of the letter ‘suaad’ which is also somewhat similar to the shape of the ‘siin’ we saw earlier. The letter ‘zuaad’ here is only differentiated by the placement of one nuqta above the initial shape of the group.

This is the letter ‘suaad’ (Devanagri: सुआद | IPA:  /sʊaːd̪/ | Pronunciation:  ).

This creates the sound of ‘s’ (स) as in “serpent”, “basin”, “moss” etc. or as in Hindi/Urdu words such as - "दा", "हिसार", "ख़ास" etc.




10.1.2: ‘zuaad’

This is the letter ‘zuaad’ (Devanagri: जुआद | IPA:  /zʊaːd̪/ | Pronunciation:   ).

This creates the sound of ‘z’ (ज़) as in “zebra”, “bazaar”, “jazz” etc. or as in Hindi/Urdu words such as - "रूर", "हरत", "नारा" etc.
