INTRODUCTION

This unit will introduce you to the 'siin' (  Devanagri:  सीन | IPA: /si ːn/ | Pronunciation:    ) group. The 'siin' group consists of two letters - ‘siin’ and ‘shiin’ as shown below:

As you can see, both these letters share the same base shape of the letter ‘siin’. The letter ‘sheen’ is only differentiated by the placement of the three nuqte above the initial part of the letter.

13.1.1: ‘siin’

This is the letter 'siin' (  Devanagri:  सीन | IPA: /siːn/ | Pronunciation:     ).

This creates the sound of 's' (स) as in “soap”, “snake”, “grass” etc. or as in Hindi words such as: - "साथी", "आसान", "बी" etc.


13.1.2: ‘shiin’

This is the letter 'shiin' (  Devanagri:  सीन | IPA: /ʃiːn/ | Pronunciation:     )

This creates the sound of ‘sh’ (श) as in “shark”, “mushroom”, “cash” etc. or as in Hindi words - "शादी", "निशान", "ता" etc.
