INTRODUCTION

In this unit, we’ll learn about - ‘laam’ ( Devanagri: लाम | IPA:  /la:m/ | Pronunciation:  ) and ‘miim’ ( Devanagri: मीम | IPA:  /mi:m/ | Pronunciation:  ). These are individual letters and do not belong to any group.

18.1.1: ‘laam’

This is the letter ‘laam’ ( Devanagari: लाम | IPA:  /la:m/ | Pronunciation:  ).

It has the sound of ‘l’ as in the English words “land”, “colour”, “camel” etc. or the sound of    in the Hindi words such as ड़का, खेना, ह etc.

18.1.2: ‘miim’

This is the letter ‘miim’ ( Devanagari: मीम | IPA:  /mi:m/ | Pronunciation:  ).

It has the sound of ‘m’ as in the English words “mother”, “camel”, “team” etc. or the sound of म  in the Hindi words such as माँ, करा, ह etc.
