INTRODUCTION

In this unit, we will look at the ‘toey’ (Devanagri: तोए | IPA:  /t̪oːeː/ | Pronunciation:     ) group. The 'toey' group consists of two letters - ‘toey’ and ‘zoey’ as shown below:

Both these letters have the same basic shape of the letter ‘toey’ and are only differentiated by the placement of one nuqta above the basic shape of the group in the case of ‘zoey’.

This is the letter ‘toey’ (Devanagri: तोए | IPA:  /t̪oːeː/ | Pronunciation:  ).

This creates the sound of soft ‘t’ (त) as in the Hindi/Urdu words “रीक़ा”, “ख़रा”, “ख़”.

15.1.2: ‘zoey’

This is the letter ‘zoey’ (Devanagri: ज़ोए | IPA:  /zoːeː/ | Pronunciation:     ).

This creates the sound of ‘z’ (ज़) as in “zebra”, “bazaar”, “jazz” etc. or as in Hindi/Urdu words such as - "न", "नर", "हाफ़ि"
